Brazilla Carroll Reece was born on a farm near Butler, Johnson County, Tennessee, December 22, 1889. He attended Johnson County public schools, Watauga Academy, Carson-Newman College, New York University, and the University of London before becoming an assistant secretary and instructor at New York University from 1916 to 1917. In May of 1917 Reece enlisted with the American Expeditionary Forces and served from October 1917 until July 1919. During his military service, Reece was at the front two hundred and ten days and commanded the 3rd Battalion of the One Hundred and Second Infantry Regiment, Twenty-sixth Division. Reece was cited for bravery by Marshal Petain and Generals Pershing, Hale, and Edwards for "service above the call of duty" (while at the front) and decorated with the Distinguished Service Cross, Distinguished Service Medal, Purple Heart, and the French Croix de Guerre with Palm. After the war, Reece took employment as New York University's Director of the School of Business Administration, a position he retained until 1920.
B. Carroll Reece was elected as a Republican representative to the sixty-seventh Congress in 1921 and remained Tennessee's first congressional district's representative until 1931. Losing the 1930 re-election bid to Congress, Reece immediately sought and eventually was elected to the seventy-third Congress in 1933 and remained a congressional representative until 1947. As a leading Tennessee congressman, Reece also served as a delegate to the Republican National Conventions for 1928, 1932, 1936, 1940, 1944, and 1948. In addition to being a respected lawyer, banker, and publisher, Reece was a member of the Board of Regents of the Smithsonian Institute between 1945 and 1946 and chairman of the Republican National Committee between 1946 and 1948. He was an unsuccessful candidate for election to the United States Senate in 1948 but was elected to the eighty-second congress. Reece retained his congressional seat until his death at the naval hospital in Bethesda, Maryland, March 19, 1961.
