The San Gabriel Mission was founded September 8, 1771 by Fathers Pedro Benito
Cambon and Angel Fernández de la Somera under the direction of Father Junipero
Serra. The mission was moved to its current location in 1776 The current mission
building was built 1791 - 1805 of brick, stone and mortar and is the oldest
building of those materials in Southern California. The mission was secularized
in 1834 and returned to the church in 1859. The mission church was damaged
significantly by the Whittier earthquake in 1987 but has been restored.
The mission church remains an active Catholic Church with two services each
Sunday 7:00 A.M. and 9:30 A.M
The Mission church, museum, grounds, gardens, and gift shop are open seven
days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
