A ship named Carrier Pigeon wrecked upon Whale Point along the California coast in 1853. Afterwards, locals referred to the point as Pigeon Point.

On her maiden voyage, the Carrier Pigeon was 5 months out of Boston on her way to San Francisco when she wrecked.

Fortunately, all aboard survived.
