South Side:
"The mystic chords of memory stretching from every battlefield to every patriot heart and hearthstone over all this broad land will yet swell the chorus of the Union when touched as they surely will be by the better Angels of our nature - A. Lincoln
West Side:
To those noble women whose prayers and faith had heroic deeds will never be forgotten.
North Side:
In memory of the men whose stalwart patriotism and willing sacrifice preserved the Union and abolished slavery.
East Side:
Patriotism answers the call to arms.
The sloped level of the base contains bronze plaques all around the monument. On these plaques are the names and units of thousands of men and women.
