Chavez, together with Dolores Huerta, formed the National Farm Workers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers. His work in labor rights made him one of the greatest American civil rights leader. His birthday is a holiday in 8 states (including California) and many parks around the country are named after him.
During the 1970s, Chavez lead many protests including on in Monterey county which got him arrested.
The statue of Chavez, followed by people is located in a plaza named after him. The plaza is in downtown, across from city hall. On the base is written, Si se Puede.
