Woodland is neither a town, village or hamlet but is the name of the long broad valley of scattered homes and farms hemmed in by the North South ridge of the Woodland Fells to the East and to the East by the outlying ridge of Broughton Moor.
St.John The Evangelist church of Woodland stands at the near head of the valley, the church was built in 1865 but stands on the foundations of a much earlier one.
Close to the church is Monks Way,and as the name implies is a bridle way which leads to the village of Torver,in the past it was used by the Monks of Furness Abbey. In the middle ages the bridle way was used to bring corpses here for burial.
