Two bridges, side-by-side, spanning the Merrimack River. One is a regal symbol of a community, its green arches in harmony with the lush scenery. The other, a temporary blemish to the landscape.

Installation of a temporary river span will allow repairs to landmark Tyngsboro Bridge.

Work crews installed a 650-foot temporary bridge across the Merrimack River as part of a Massachusetts Highway Department (MHD) effort to repair the Tyngsboro Bridge, a 70-year-old landmark near the New Hampshire border.

Atlantic Bridge & Engineering Inc., Salisbury, Mass., assembled a Mabey Panel Bridge on the east side of the river. The bridge will rest on a temporary abutment and four piers built by the $4.75-million project's general contractor, SPS New England, also of Salisbury.
Selectmen may ask the Massachusetts Highway Department to consider a plan that would allow both the Tyngsboro Bridge and its temporary replacement bridge to remain open long-term.

As part of the proposal, the Tyngsboro Bridge, once repairs are finished, would be used to carry Route 113 and Route 3A traffic across the Merrimack River after it reopens. The temporary bridge would also remain open for emergency vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.

The coords are for the center of the bridge. Parking is available on both ends relatively nearby and you carefully walk to get pics.
