The Brattleboro Retreat, Linden St. (1836), is a partially State-supported hospital for the insane.  The brick buildings of the large plant, some of recent construction, others dating from the earlier years of the institution, are set in the quiet seclusion of the spacious landscaped grounds.  There were about 700 patients in residence in 1937. - Vermont: A Guide to the Green Mountain State, 1937, Brattleboro section, pg 100.

The Brattleboro Retreat continues to operate as a psychiatric hospital with other programs including out-patient treatments along with full hospitalization.
