1st white man here was trappers in 1825. Moroni Campbell family spent the winter here in 1859 followed by others in 1860. John Freeman renamed the settlement Liberty.
The town is on U-162 east of North Ogden and north of Eden. There are several reasons presented for the name source. One version states that shortly after the Civil War the name "liberty" was very popular throughout the country. Another source claims that after John Freeman had been having trouble with range cattle, he told his neighbors, Fisher and Morris of North Ogden, that since people seemed to be taking a lot of liberties with property, he thought Liberty was an appropriate name for the settlement. Another reference states that the community was named after the Liberty Prison at Liberty, Clay County, Missouri.
