HISTORIC BRIGHAM CITY DEPOT... BRIGHAM CITY, UTAH.. WELCOME!

A BIT ABOUT OUR DEPOT..... It was built by the Oregon Shortline in
1906... later purchased by the Union Pacific. It was entered on the
National Register of Historic Buildings, July 16, 1992.

On February 1, 1994 the Depot was deeded to the Golden Spike Association by the Union Pacific Railroad. The Golden Spike Association, a non-profit organization was started in 1957 for the purpose of protecting, promoting and preserving the Golden Spike, its history and the Golden Spike Site at Promontory Summit, Utah. The GSA is largely responsible for the development of GS site & locomotives.

The Craftsman Style architecture, unique to the era has retained most of its integrity, i.e., the large sweeping multiple hip roof and wide overhanging eaves with wooden brackets. The interior is as it was in 1907. The foundation is constructed of 80 tons of cement and is very sound. Passing trains do not affect stability.

The Depot has served thousands of travelers. The 1925 records show 15 daily departures from this Depot, including fruit, fish, mail and canned goods. The Depot is no longer active. Passenger service declined in the 1950’s...and became passenger/freight in 1950-1970. Amtrak operated daily 1971-1977. But, the Depot was the central hub of Brigham City’s rail service for four decades.

The interior of the Depot is partially restored to its original beauty.. the north waiting room is 99% completed. Entry, lobby and south waiting room and freight area are painted to original status. Restoration is ongoing as funding is available.

The Depot houses a museum of railroad and historical artifacts, and serves the area of Northern Utah as an education hub for schools and patrons. The new I-15 interchange was completed in 1996, and Forest Street is now the access route from the west; the Depot stands as the Gateway to Brigham City, and points east, north and south. It could be the “Visitor’s Center” of Box Elder County.

Our pre-development restoration estimate totals $200,000 plus. To date, volunteers and in—kind services have provided all of the interior surface work. Underlying restoration is still to be completed. Outside building repair and painting, as well as a new roof, parking and landscaping is now underway. Over 60,000 man hours have been donated to Depot restoration to date.

Our garden area to the south is partially complete. Flowers, shrubs and lawn are the planned landscaping.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO DONATE EITHER TIME OR FUNDS TO THIS HISTORIC
RESTORATION, PLEASE CALL 801—723—7130 OR 723—2989. Golden Spike
Association, 833 West Forest, Brigham City, Utah 84302
