Pickering Nuclear Generating Station is the second largest nuclear power plant in Canada second only to Bruce Nuclear Generating Station. It is operated as two distinct stations, Pickering A and Pickering B, which share common structures and systems.
Pickering A was put into operation between 1971 and 1973 and has 4 CANDU reactors and can produce 2060 MW of power. Pickering B was put into operation 1983 to 1986 and has another 4 CANDU reactors and can produce 2064 MW of power. The station's total output when all reactors are running is 4124 MW. Currently 2 of Pickering A's reactors are in shut down in safe storage. There is also a 1.8MW wind turbine on the west side of the site.
The reactors can be seen from the side from the beach accessble from Commerce Street Park to the west of the site. To see all 8 units you need to go to Petticoat Creek Conservation Area which is further west at the south end of Whites Road.
