This open spandrel deck arch constructed of reinforced concrete in 1931-32 is important historically because it connected the isolated population of Big Sur by automobile for the first time. Before the construction of the coast highway (and its five significant spans, including Bixby Creek) the thirty mile journey from Big Sur to the nearest major town, Monterey, could take days of rough travel.
