Wayne Woodrow "Woody" Hayes was born February 14, 1913 in Clifton, Ohio. He earned a bachelors degree in history and English from Denison University in 1935 and a Master's in educational administration from The Ohio State University in 1948.

He started his football coaching career at Mingo Junction High School in 1935 and later moved to New Philadelphia High School. He coached at Denison University, Miami of Ohio and finally, Ohio State, where he coached from 1951 until 1978.

He is buried with his wife Anne in Union Cemetery, located just north of the OSU campus. The epitaph reads:
And in the night of death, hope sees a star
and listening love hears the rustle of a wing.

The Hayes' grave is located in the new addition of Union Cemetery, Section 12, Lot 37.

An excellent biography of Woody Hayes -- coach, teacher, humanitarian -- can be found at WOSU's "Beyond the Gridiron": (visit link)
