Construction of this handsome, well -built adobe home began in 1833 and it was purchased in 1837 by James Stokes, who expanded it into two stories and added a wing. Stokes had been a common sailor but when he came ashore in Monterey, he set himself up as a pharmacist and doctor - apparently with the aid of cases of medicine stolen off the boat. Although several prominent Monterey citizens died while under his care, it never seemed to diminish his status as a physician. Years later, Stokes took his own life as a result of some scandal (that had nothing to do with his doctoring).
The Stokes adobe passed through several hands until 1890 when it was purchased by Mortimer Gragg and his wife Hattie (Harriet). Their home was a center of local social life until Hattie died in 1948.
In 1950 the Stokes adobe was turned into a restaurant by the Gallatins. The first ghost reports come after Gallatins' restaurant opened. People see a man dressed in clothes of the 1800's, who is believed to be Stokes. Another apparition of a beautiful woman is seen on the staircase. This may be the ghost of Hattie, reluctant to leave the party in what used to be her home. A disembodied female voice is sometimes heard when all else is quiet, and lights flash on upstairs when no one is there.
