The observatory was constructed from 1933 to 1935 by the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC), Company 927 of Camp F-23 (Camp Belknap). The structure is an open shelter built of lava rock found at the site. There are a number of large viewing windows plus small viewing ports aligned with the Cascade peaks. In 1937, a 36” diameter bronze peak finder was installed on top of the observatory. The observatory was named for Dee Wright, a Forest Service packer for 24 years and the CCC foreman for the construction, he died in 1934 before the observatory was completed.
