The Marine and the Biologist met in Jacksonville, Florida, in April of 2003 and hit it off. One thing led to another and we moved in together later that year. Neither of us felt any compelling need to get married as we were both in our early forties and having a family wasn't in our future. We were already totally committed to one another so we just didn't feel that a ceremony and a piece of paper were necessary. That all changed during the summer of 2006.
The Biologist's dad who had been suffering from emphysema and heart disease for several years came down with a cold that put him in intensive care in Palm Bay, Florida. He was in the hospital for 10 days and the Biologist was down there the entire time with her mom (who had Alzheimer's disease) and her two sisters. During this time, the Marine's sister, Theresa, took ill in Cincinnati, Ohio, and ended up in intensive care as well, and the Marine flew up to Ohio to be with his family. So there we both were, dealing with very traumatic situations and we couldn't even be together as both our families needed us. The Biologist's most beloved father passed away that July and the Marine's dearest sister passed away 8 days later. Our cell phones were our lifelines to one another.
A few days after the Marine's sister passed away, he called the Biologist and they were both in tears. Out of the blue, the Marine said, "We need to talk when I get home." Uh oh, those words NEVER bode well. So the Biologist said, "What do you mean? What do we need to talk about?" He replied, "We just need to talk." In the throes of an emotional low and not thinking clearly, the Biologist sobbed, "Are you breaking up with me!? I just don't think I can handle anything else right now! Sob, sob." The Marine said, "What?!!! Of course not. Just the opposite! I think we should get married!"
So that's how the Marine proposed to the Biologist. He didn't intend for it to be over the phone, but that's how it happened. Anyway, after the call was over, the Marine told his dad about the conversation and how the Biologist had jumped to the wrong conclusion. His dad just shook his head and said, "Son, you aren't doing something right."

Since the proposal took place over our cell phones with the Marine at his parents' home in Columbus, Ohio, and the Biologist in Palm Bay, Florida, we've posted the coordinates for the T-Mobile store in our home town of Jacksonville, Florida, where we had purchased our cell phones.
