Darrell's Dream playground opened in April 2007 with $3 million funding from many individuals, groups, and businesses. It fills a valley with surrounded by a disc golf course, soccer fields, fishing area, and boat launch.
Unfortunately for travelers, this is not a quick McD stop. From I-81 Exit 59, head northwest for two miles towards Kingsport on TN36 (Fort Henry Drive) to the third traffic light (Sunoco, CVS on corners). Turn right on Colonial Heights Road for roughly half mile. Turn right on Warriors Drive. Stay on this narrow road as it crosses railroad tracks and into the park. At the bottom of the hill is parking for the playground. (If you miss the turn for Warriors Drive, then stay on Colonial Heights Road until it crosses railroad tracks. Turn right on Hemlock Road and enter the main entrance to the park. Follow the main park road around the lake to the same parking area.)
The playground is divided into zones for 2-5, 2-12, and 5-12 years old. It has a picnic pavilion and handicapped accessible restrooms. It has slides, sand area, puzzles, climbing poles, puppet theater area, pipe bells, etc. A paved path around the area has a Braille/audio trail based on the Naria series. A fully accesible treehouse has been constructed. This is not a take and drop your kids off type of place, but a facility that you can interact with your kids - especially those with special needs. (Although now see that free wifi is available.)
A full slide show presented to the Kiwanis can be found at (

There are also a geocache nearby on Duck Island if a parent needs to stretch their legs.
