The Bidwell's are one of the oldest families (late 1600s) in East Hartford. They owned a saw-mill near here on the Hockanum, river.

Zebulon was married to Mary Burnham, a decendent of Thomas Burnham who bought the land of East Hartford and South Windsor from the podunk indians in 1659.

In the Battle of Freeman's Farm (aka Battle of Stillwater) in the Battle of Saratoga, Zebulon Bidwell was faatlly wounded when he lost a leg to a cannon ball. He died the next day.
