The Columbus Stockade existed as two buildings and served as jail and police headquarters from the 1850’s to 1906 when they were joined together into the structure that exists today.

The balad “Columbus Stockade Blues” was written by Thomas Darby and Jimmie Tarlton and recorded in 1927. Since that time many artists have played the song in several different musical styles ranging from band, jazz, blue grass, country and blues.

The Register lists the building's current use as commerce/trade - warehouse but, since it was listed the building has been converted/refurbished back to a jail facility and is currently used to house prisioners sentenced to weekends in jail (Friday evening to Sunday afternoon) for offenses such as DUI. It would appear that the opportunity once more exists for a prisioner to sing the words:

“Way Down in Columbus, Georgia,
Wanna be back in Tennessee,
Way down in Columbus Stockade,
Friends have turned their backs on me.”

A far more pleasant way of visiting this historic old bulding would be as a part of a walking tour of this area of Columbus that contains several historic African American Churches, historic markers and Government Buildings.

Some information contained here was derived from a Historic Marker at the site of this building.
