Frederick Arthur Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby, KG, GCB, GCVO, PC (15 January 1841 – 14 June 1908), known as Frederick Stanley until 1886 and
as The Lord Stanley of Preston between 1886 and 1893, was a Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom who served as Colonial
Secretary from 1885 to 1886 and Governor General of Canada from 1888 to 1893. An avid sportsman, although he is most famous for presenting
the Stanley Cup, he was firstly responsible for the Stanley Park project.
On 27 September 1888 the park was officially opened, where it was named after Lord Stanley, Governor General of Canada at the time. The
following year, Stanley became the first Governor General to visit British Columbia when he officially dedicated the park.
An observer at the event wrote:
“Lord Stanley threw his arms to the heavens, as though embracing within them the whole of one thousand acres of primeval forest, and dedicated
it 'to the use and enjoyment of peoples of all colours, creeds, and customs, for all time."
The Statue itself was erected in 1960.
