The original elevator was constructed in 1882, but it and subsequent versions burned and were replaced. Eventually, this elevator was built in 1894 with steel rails and steel cables to lessen the fire hazard.
The cost to ride was just five cents until 1962 when the price was increased to a dime. Today the one-way ride is $1.00 for an adult, fifty cents for a child (5-12) and $1.50 if you bring a bicycle. Children under 5 are free.
