Custer County's 1889 ornate red brick courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1910. The present stone courthouse, built in 1911, was one of the first fire proof buildings in central Nebraska.

The courthouse, which was designed by John Latenser, architect for several Nebraska courthouses, stands in a square on the edge of downtown Broken Bow.
