Designed by Chicago-based Alfred Benesch and Company, this pair of bridges cost $14 million to build and won the 2006 Outstanding Project Award from the National Council of Structural Engineers Association. It opened in time to welcome visitors coming to Detroit for Super Bowl XL in January of 2006. A distinct football motif is included in the arches. As one approaches and crosses the bridge, the football shapes appear to soar up and over in field goal fashion.
