Okehampton town was founded by Baldwin de Brionne who was the Norman sheriff of Devon. The new town was found shortly before 1086, on a wedge-like site between the East Okement and West Okement rivers. The original town, a Saxon site, was gradually abandoned except for the parish church of "All Saints" which now stands alone.
Because of the distance of the parish church from the new town, a chantry chapel of St. James was erected in the town. This was rebuilt in 1862, except the 15th century granite tower. From this tower the curfew used to be sounded. Inside the church there is Tudor and 18th century woodwork with a reader's desk and pulpit, the latter dated 1662.
