The Cook Strait ferries provide a vital "iron bridge" between the road and rail systems of the two main islands in the country.
There are several sailings a day in both directions but try to make the crossing in daylight if you want to see the scenery - the run down Queen Charlotte Sound is quite beautiful.
Interislander operates three ships to carry both passengers and their vehicles: Arahura, Aratere and Kaitaki. All ships offer a safe, comfortable and affordable journey, as well as a complete range of onboard services. Offering up to 11 sailings a day, passengers also have the convenience of a wide choice of travel times.
Facts and Figures about the three ships can be found at this link
