The richest botanic garden of Hungary, having more than 12 000 species in it and presenting them in the frame of a beautiful landscape garden, was founded in the first half of the last century, in the style of the English gardens of Georgian age.

The present form of the gardens can be attributed to the 19th-century owners, the Vigyázó family. Employing the most knowledgeable professionals of his day, Count Sándor Vigyázó developed the garden which achieved European fame. After his death it was bequeathed to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Today this open-air taxonomic collection of close to 2,000 species and varieties is universally regarded as unparalleled in terms of scientific history and certain sections are unique in Europe.

A mai kert arculatát a területet a XIX. század utolsó évtizedeiben birtokló Vigyázó családnak köszönheti. Vigyázó Sándor gróf - a kor legjobb szakembereit igénybe véve - kertjét európai híruvé fejlesztette, halála után a magyar Tudományos Akadémiára hagyományozta. Ma már világviszonylatban is egyedülálló tudománytörténeti értéknek számít a közel kétezer növényfajt és fajtát bemutató szabadtéri rendszertani gyujtemény. A kínai osfenyo mellett sok értékes ritkaság, köztük számos keleti-ázsiai fa- és cserjefaj az országban egyedül itt tekintheto meg. A fák és cserjék között egész sereg ritka juhar, hárs, koris, berkenye, boróka, lonc, orgona fajjal találkozni. A madárbirs és bangita gyujtemény Európában is egyedülállónak mondható.
