Orodruin, or Mount Doom, is a fictional volcano in J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth universe. Located in the heart of the black land of Mordor and approximately 4,500 feet (1.4 km) high, it is the site where the One Ring was originally forged by the Dark Lord Sauron and represents the endpoint of Frodo Baggins's quest to destroy the Ring which is recounted in The Lord of the Rings.

In Peter Jackson's film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, Orodruin was represented by Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Ruapehu, both active volcanoes in New Zealand. In long shots the mountain is either a large model or a CGI effect, or a combination. It was not permitted to film the summit of Ngauruhoe because the Maori hold it to be sacred. However, some scenes on the slopes of Mount Doom were filmed on the slopes of another nearby volcano, Mount Ruapehu.

During filming of Lord of the Rings we were able to drive up Mt Ruapehu to the top of the Bruce Road and watch the filming taking place on the rocks beside Meads Wall. Mead’s Wall was a filming location for The Lord of the Rings trilogy and features in the battle of the Second Age when the Ring is cut from Sauron's finger.

From Meads Wall you can look across at Mt Doom....Mt Ngauruhoe located at the following co-ordinates: S 39° 09.700 E 175° 37.500
Drive up the Mangatepopo Road to get as close as possible to Mt Doom or view it from the top of the Bruce Road (SH.48) on Mt Ruapehu at Meads Wall S 39 14.190 E 175 33.650 at the spot where filming actually took place.
