The Music Vale Seminary (1835-1876) the first school in The United States to issue degrees in music. Only music was taught at this school. The founder, Oramel Whittlesey, felt that by only having one course of study that it would lead to excellence.

Shortly after his death, the school burned down as was not rebuilt.
