After serving as a sergeant in the Revolution, Samuel Smith became a Methodist Minister, and he and his wife Sarah moved west to settle an area of Ohio then known as Darby Plains. They became part of the small farming community in the area. Samuel and his wife, Sarah, now rest in a cemetery with one daughter, Sally. The cemetery in which they are buried is named the Smith Cemetery after this founding family.

In 1982 Smith Cemetery was transferred from Darby Township to the State of Ohio Department of Natural Resources. It remains in control of the ODNR protected as one of the last remaining original prairie lands in Ohio. Twenty-three native prarie plants have been identified in this cemetery that houses one of the nation's pioneers.

There is roadside parking available on Boyd Road. Smith Cemetery is open for visiting Samuel Smith's grave year-round, with hours from sunrise to sunset. No dogs are allowed in State of Ohio Nature Preserves. More information about the Nature Preserve and this cemetery can be found at: (visit link)

If you want to mix seeing the flowers and watching butterflies with this visit, the best time to see the most variety of flowers in bloom is from July 4th through the first week in August.
