'Bromham Bridge has been closed to all traffic as part of an ongoing traffic experiment by Bedfordshire County Council.

The restrictions came into force on Monday, August 11, and will be in place until Sunday, October 19.

Traffic is being diverted via Box End Road and the A428 in both directions.

However, the bridge will remain open for cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders.

The experiment is part of a proposal to improve safety, reduce the risk of vehicles damaging the bridge and give priority to pedestrians and cyclists in the future.

One of the options already trialled is making the bridge one way to traffic on the westbound route only, reducing the volume of vehicles using the bridge and 'rat-running,' which is a concern of some local residents.

Coun Tom Wootton, cabinet member for highways and transport at County Hall, said: "We decided to carry out the trials after consulting with local people, who agreed the best way forward was to make the bridge safer and easier for pedestrians to use.

"The consultation revealed an even split between those wanting the bridge closed entirely to traffic and those wanting it left open to westbound traffic only.

"A small number of people also wanted the bridge to remain as it is. There will be opportunities for residents to have their say once this second experimental closure finishes on October 19, when a full public consultation will be held."
