Spanish Bronze Cannon, San Pedro, CA - Static Artillery Displays on Waymarking.com

This cannon is a trophy of the Spanish-American War. Engraved on the top is this: "Captured at Santiago de Cuba July 17, 1898 by the 5th Army Corp, U.S. Army commanded by Major General Wm. R. Shafter. Presented by him to the City of Los Angeles in trust for the Native Sons of the Golden West, and accepted as a token of the valor and patriotism of the Army of the United States."

Santiago de Cuba is an old port city, and we can imagine that this cannon was guarding that port. It may have been taken from the Castillo del Morro, a fort overlooking the bay, built in 1643...

Bronze muzzle loading cannons such as this one, with a lions head cascabel were often made in the late 1600s to middle 1700s.

Entrance to the Maritime Museum costs $3 for adults, $1 for youth and seniors, children free. Parking is free. See the maritime artifacts and then take a break on the deck with the cannon.
