After the first Carnegie libraries build in the Steel Valley area, being all in grandiose and monumental style, the eight urban branches within the city of Pittsburgh were smaller, more camouflaged within the residential nature of the urban landscape, and with open stacks, allowing the library to be staffed by a single person, usually located in the center of the building, in an area called circulation desk (rather than delivery desk, as in the closed stacks internal designs). This was the second branch library opened in Pittsburgh, in 1899. It has no air conditioning (A/C), and in some of the hottest days in the summer months, this library will occasionally close in mid-day.

On October 6, 2009, it was reported in the local newspaper that this branch has been selected for possible closure ( (visit link) )
