Sioux County in the northwest corner of the state was not organized until 20 years after Nebraska attained statehood. Several settlements competed for the designation as county seat in an 1887 election. Harrison, then called Bowen won, possibly because the old-time cowboy assigned to carry ballets from the village of Bodac stopped for the night in Bowen, where townspeople entertained him with cards and liquor while they replaced his Bodarc ballots with Bowen ones.
A courthouse constructed with locally produced brick served the county until the present building was opened in 1931. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
