The North Shore Channel of the Chicago River, is a branch that runs North all the way up to the locks of the Wilmette Harbor of Lake Michigan. The GPS coordinates point directly to the boat launch area, equipped only for Canoes, Kayaks, and Row Boats. Park area around the launch is known as the Channelside Park Canoe Launch and it is operated by the Chicago River Canoe & Kayak company.

Kayak ride upto Lake Michigan is about 4 miles. The channel runs through wooded areas and a forest preserve; we have see a variety of wildlife: Great Blue Herons, Green Herons, Great Egrets, Turtles, Comorants, Turtles, Deer, Kingfishers.

The current flows South, so we usually go North and paddle against the current and the return trip is slightly easier. Overall the current is very light. Likewise very little chop: the trees protect from the wind, and no power boats are permitted.

Paddling conditions to be expected:
This branch of the Chicago River is a channel that has locks on either end, so the current if very slow and calm. Lots of trees and birds. You go under about 10 bridges -- your only real exposure to auto traffic or noise.

Difficulty of the trip:
Very easy. Very little current. The tree lined shores protect you from the heat of the day, wind, and street noises.

Length of trip: 4 miles to WIlmette Harbor. 8 mile loop

Portages:
none

Permits required:
none

Type of trip:
This trip is a loop. You start going North and turn around and head back as your energy level suites you. We like going all the way up to Lake Michigan. Even though the locks block you from going in the Lake, you can see some sail boats and the beautiful The Baha'i House of Worship.
