The following history of the
Turf Motel is posted on the hotel's website:
The Turf Motel has been serving Jefferson County, West Virginia since the early 1950’s. Owned and operated by the Marcus Family, loyalty and customer satisfaction has carried on throughout the years and generations. Founding couple, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Marcus, opened the Southern Motel, the first modern amenity-equipped Motel in Jefferson County, on March 1, 1952. Located across the street from the present day Turf, the Southern Motel was sold in the mid 1950’s upon the opening of the Turf Diner in 1955 followed by the opening of the Turf Motel a few years later. Structural changes have occurred throughout the years, but the family-oriented structure upon which the Turf was founded, still thrives under current owners, brothers Terry and Ron Marcus. Fire destroyed the restaurant and office area on November 16, 2000, lending to the creation of the newly opened section with expanded office area and complete new hotel style amenities. The Turf Restaurant has been a fixture on main street in Charles Town since its opening in 1955. Originally called the “Turf Diner”, today’s Rib Room still serves the best Sunday breakfast and the “Area’s Best” Prime Rib. Want some nostalgia?.... Stop by on Sunday Morning…the little lady that may be your waitress has been with us since opening day in 1955. In fact, she still answers the phone “Turf Diner”. Her name is Sara and when you visit, ask her about the old days at the Turf.
