During the golden age of steel production, the city of Pittsburgh experienced a population growth and building of schools and facilities. Since 1980, the city's population has been in decline, and in an attempt to restructure costs and expenses, the City of Pittsburgh school district superintendent Roosevelt has closed several small and medium schools in 2006.

The Morningside school enrolled students from Kindergarden to Grade 8. The neighborhood is mostly made of blue-collar residents, city workers, public servants for city and county governments. A large segment of the population is of Italian descent from the region of Calabria and from a small town north of Naples called Spigno Saturnia.

The building is currently not used, and in december, the front area is used to store Christmas trees for sale by a sidewalk vendor.
