Middleton-in-Teesdale was the main centre in the area for lead mining and the road would have been used to transport materials etc to the mines and lead away to market. Edge is a spot just east of Woodland though why it was used on the milestones is unknown to me. On the 1859 Ordnance Survey map of the area the only thing at Edge is the Edge House Public House. There appears to be a discrepancy with the mileage on this milestone. It is only one mile from the stones either side but an additional 1/2 mile has crept in somehow?
