Long Description:
Lock 25 is located just south of Ohio State Route 682 in Chauncey, Ohio.

Lock 25 gave boats access to a slackwater crossing of the Hocking River, behind dam 7, just north of mile 50 on the canal. This crossing also gave boats access to the warf at Salina. Salina was a busy town with a grist mill, saw mill, salt wells, salt furnaces and a coal mine.

Just beyond Lock 25, boats could access the Chauncey warf. Chauncey was named for one of its original investors, Elihu Chauncey of Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Like Salina, Chauncey was a salt-making center.

The Hocking Canal was plagued by flooding and maintenance was a large portion of the canal's operating costs. This section of the canal, linking Athens to Nelsonville, was abandoned after flooding in 1873.

This lock is in poor condition. Many of the stones that lined the lock wall are now laying in the canal bed.The cut of the canal is very obvious in this section. It is also very clear where the canal entered the Hocking River.

The most curious feature of this lock is the timbers that line its floor. They are arranged like ties on a railroad and bound together with iron pins.

Access to this lock by foot is difficult. The general area is very brushy and filled with debris deposited from numerous floods.
