Jeremiah Wadsworth made his fortune in West India trade, when he as a Sea Captain. He was successful at procuring supplies for the Continental Army, in the revolutionary war and became Deputy Commissary General of Purchases in 1777. The Ancient Burying Ground was Hartford's only graveyard, from 1640 until the 1800s. It has the graves of the founding fathers of Hartford. It is rumored that over 6000 people were buried there. It is only a few hundred feet from where the Wadsworth family house once stood.
