The winged horse sculpture sits atop the north tower of the Great Platte River Road Archway with a wingspan of 25 feet. On the south tower there is a sculpture of just the 25 foot long wings. The wings represent moevement and the horse represents the Pony Express and all the brave men who rode their horses through dangerous country to take the latest news to far away locations.
"Designed by Kent Bloomer, the sculpture includes two sets of 25-foot-high aluminum wings which will be mounted atop the north and south towers of the Archway. Wings were chosen by Bloomer to symbolize movement, transportation and communication. An aluminum horse leaps out of one set of wings, representing the Pony Express. All aluminum plate ornaments have been cleaned and will be left in their natural finish. Supporting the ornaments will be approximately six tons of sandblasted and painted structural steel, also fabricated by Welding Works." from website: (
