Glen Echo Park opened in 1891 as an idealistic attempt to create a National Chautauqua Assembly "to promote liberal and practical education". Instead it became the areas best amusement park, open from 1898 through 1968. The park has been restored and is now owned by the National Park Service as part of the George Washington National Parkway. Arts programs at the park are managed by the Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture. Check out their
Website for a schedule of upcoming classes.
One building remains from the original 1891 school. The remainder (other than the carousel and Spanish Ballroom) of the buildings have been restored to the art deco style they were changed to in the 1930's. The arcade is an incredible example of deco.
