The park is just around the corner from the balcony where the King and Queen of Spain addressed St. Augustine in 2001 on April Fool's Day.
The marker reads:
Pedro Menendez de Aviles Mural
A gift from the city of Aviles, Asturias, Spain
Pedro Menendez de Aviles: the person, his deeds, his times.
This theme was the challenge issued for the 7th San Agustin Ceramic Event, an annual ceramic competition held by the City of Aviles, Spain. Thirty-three artists from the region of Asturias including teachers and students of the Municipal Ceramics School of Aviles and nearly all members of the Ceramic Group of Asturias responded by creating individual tiles utilizing diverse technique and styles.
The tiles were shipped to St. Augustine and the mural assembled by skilled crews of the City of St. Augustine's Public Works Department under the artistic direction of Ramon Rodriguez, Director of the Municipal Ceramics School of Aviles.
