This marker, and the associated footstones, mark the graves of Joseph Anderson and his four children: Elizabeth "Beth", Ferne, Grace and Lewis. Their deaths were the result of murder/suicide. A farmer facing financial difficulties, Mr. Anderson threw his children down the cistern and then shot himself while his wife was away from the home for her weekly shopping.
The funeral was conducted at the home of the widow and three hearses were used to transport the caskets. According to newspaper reports of the day, the procession to the cemetery included more than one hundred "rigs" and stretched over a mile long. The children were buried together in one grave. The mother later remarried and is buried nearby with her second husband.
Gypsum Hill Cemetery was established in 1870 with the initial purchase of 20 acres. Eventually the cemetery would grow to 80 acres although in the 1920's the 20 acres at the northeast corner was sold to the Catholic Church and became Mt. Cavalry Cemetery.
