The Old Manse was built in 1832 as the pastor's residence for the First Presbyterian Church. Richard Cleveland, father of Grover Cleveland, was pastor of the church and lived here from 1834-1841. The future president was born here on March 18th, 1837.

When Cleveland became president a general interest in the building arose and people saw the need to preserve it. A group of Cleveland’s friends and admirers purchased the building in 1907 and the house was opened to the public on Cleveland's birthday in 1913.

It is now a museum owned and operated by the NJ Department of Parks and Forestry and is filled with memorabilia from Cleveland's life including a piece of his wedding cake, his fly rod and his first child, Ruth's cradle (The Baby Ruth candy bar was named after baby Ruth Cleveland, who unfortunately died in childhood).
