The East side of the Fox River on Main St (IL Rt 38) in Geneva has a very practical launch ramp for canoes and kayaks. The ramp is just North of the Geneva Dam and you can only go upstream. You need to follow the river bank for the first couple hundred feet until you get past the warning bouys and then the river is fine.

The stretch of river going North from Geneva to the next river dam in St Charles is about 2 miles, with trees and parks mostly lining the river bank. Motor boats are rare; Egrets are more common.

When you get to the St Charles Dam, the current is pretty strong, and we just turn around and let the river take us back to the launch ramp.
Parking/put-in/launching information:
The Geneva park district has free parking along the river. On weekends, the spaces fill up quickly. There a spot where you can get out and picnic at Langum Park.

Paddling conditions to be expected:
This is a section of the Fox River bracked by two dams. You launch just upstream of a dam in Geneva and you paddle just short of the next dam upstream in St Charles. So while there's current it is mostly gentle. During the Spring rains, the Fox River was closed -- too much water/current.

Difficulty of the trip:
Beginners can do this, but if the river is high or it is windy, it is more difficult.

Length of trip: 3-4 miles / 90 minutes

Portages:
The Fox River is set up so that you can go from dam to dam, with only a short portage around each of the dams.

Permits required:
no permits

Type of trip:
We do the Fox River as a loop. We start in Geneva, go North (upstream) to St Charles, and then turn around and go back to the start. This is a 3-4 mile loop.

Other information:
Birds: Great Egrets, ducks, geese. There's a picnic spot where kayaks can land at Langum Park. We rent from Geneva Kayak, located at the launch ramp.
