The Grand Trunk line between Portland, Maine and Montreal, Quebec, was intended as a link in a worldwide rail/steamship transportation network, but competition, the changing economic relationship between Canada and the US and the death of GT President Charles M. Hays aboard the Titanic left this village out in the cold.*
The effect of the railroad's boom and bust in Island Pond is clearly evidenced in the number of grand old Victorian "summer homes," some cared for, some decaying.
