Depicted is one of several places in this community where the border runs through a village street. Except for street signs suddenly being in French, one gets the impression that it is all one village. Both Americans and Canadians use the same library (pictured), which straddles the border, as do some houses on Lee and Phelps Streets, to the east. Imagine preparing a meal in one country and eating it in another, without leaving your house.
As I was taking these pictures, I observed a woman pull up and park on Rue Church. She walked across the lawn of the library (thus entering the US), and disappeared back into Canada as she entered the library.
Derby Line/Stanstead has been a blended border community for over two hundred years. Now, with the increased attention to national security, the comfort the locals have long felt with having next-door neighbors in a different country may come to an end, if Homeland Security has its way and puts up its fences.
