This mailbox is situated in the interesting little country village of Tikokino off Highway 50, at the corner of Phillips Street.
Past History: Tikokino was first called Hampden when founded in 1880. It was first laid out in anticipation of the Wellington-Napier railway passing through. This never materialized. Many sections were purchased but not built on. Today the original layout remains with homes scattered sparsely. Several early cottages exist from the sawmilling days of the 1860s.
A post office, bakery, tailor, blacksmith, school, library, stores, churches and for a short time military barracks and the Theatre Royal supported the population.
An octagonal blockhouse was built for the protection of families during the land wars. About 1900 the name was changed to Tikokino.
