The Beavertail Light is the third oldest lighthouse in the United States. The first lighthouse built on this site in 1749 was a 58 foot wooden tower. The first lighthouse burned down in 1753 and was replaced a year later with stone and brick tower. Unfortunately damage to the lighthouse from numerous storms and the British weakend the tower. The current lighthouse was built in 1856 and is still an active aid to navigation. The lighthouse is not open to the public but the Assistant Keepers House has been turned into a museum.
