In Roman mythology, Venus was the goddess of love and beauty, however, she originally was considered the goddess and patroness of gardens, vineyards and vegetation. Later, under Greek influence, she was compared with Aphrodite and took on many of Aphrodite's aspects. Roman portraits and statues of Venus are usually identical to the Greek representation of Aphrodite. The statue depicts Venus rising from the sea, being lifted from the depths by two cupids and two fish. This statue is made of cast iron and is one of only eight still known to exist in North America. The statue arrived in September 1913 during the installation of a public water system in the village. The villagers felt there should be some kind of public drinking fountain for both man and animal and this site was the original location of the old town water pump, so it was decided this would be a suitable spot.
